Sydney Yee
DPhil Neuroscience 2018
Medical Student at University of Calgary, Canada
MCR President 2020–2021
Born and raised in Calgary, Canada, Sydney began her academic journey with an early passion for neuroscience to alleviate the burden of irreversible neurodegenerative disease. Arriving at Keble College as a Commonwealth Scholar, she quickly immersed herself in the vibrant College community. A dedicated athlete, Sydney became an integral member of Keble College Boat Club’s women’s first VIII, embodying teamwork and perseverance both on and off the water. She served as the 2020–2021 MCR President and was instrumental in supporting students through the uncertainties of COVID-19. Under her guidance, the MCR committee fostered a sense of connection and resilience, maintaining the College spirit despite the pandemic restrictions.
Sydney’s academic focus on neurodegenerative diseases is deeply personal, inspired by her grandmother, who passed away from end-stage dementia. This personal connection fuels her research and gives it a human touch. She began her research journey during her undergraduate studies at the University of Calgary, earning a Bachelor’s in neuroscience. At Keble, her DPhil work provided insights into how astrocytes contribute to multiple sclerosis, which will identify targets for future treatment and therapies. Her commitment to education extended beyond academia, working with the Brilliant Club to teach pupils from non-selective state schools about her research to inspire the next generation of scientists.
For Sydney, Keble was not just a college but a transformative experience that shaped her academically and personally. Interacting with peers from around the world, she has formed lifelong friendships and expanded her horizons. Her time with the College’s HBAC community enriched her perspective, leaving indelible memories of camaraderie and shared purpose.
Sydney’s compassion and dedication to improving the lives of others continue to guide her journey. Currently, she is pursuing her Doctor of Medicine at the University of Calgary, where she will begin residency next year. Her commitment to patient care is as strong as her scientific expertise, and she looks forward to combining the two in her future practice.
