Ella Keenan
BA History and Politics 2019
Ella was a central figure in the JCR throughout her three years at Keble. Being elected as Vice-President during the COVID pandemic meant leading on domestic affairs and communications during periods of lockdowns and restrictions that had resulted in a very different Keble to normal. Simultaneously, Ella served as acting JCR President for half a term, and as Accommodation Officer. During her time on the JCR Committee, Ella introduced various schemes, including communal laundry supplies, a book recommendation and ordering scheme, and led a dialogue that resulted in the reopening of the College bar, as well as organising events with Keble’s exchange students. Ella jokes that her time on the Committee led to her having a conversation with every member of staff and every student at least once. For her work, she was awarded the inaugural Jonathan and Amanda Phillips Award for contribution to College life.
Ella also worked on the executive committee of the 2021 Keble Arts Festival, displaying and encouraging the talent of Keble. Coming from a non-selective state school, Ella played an active role in access and outreach work, including serving as a committee member on Keble at Large, the JCR’s dedicated outreach body, for which she produced social media content, alongside giving tours of the College, and running workshops encouraging applications to the University.
“Keble has undeniably changed my life. I arrived in 2019 with the intention of keeping a low profile and securing a degree, but left with the honour of feeling that I played an important role within the College. Keble’s community spirit is unparalleled and allowed me to engage in leadership during one of the College’s most challenging periods. I am forever grateful to be a member of such a wonderful community.”
